Harold G. Semmelrock, 53 of Stanton Rd., Gilman, died Wednesday evening November 25, 2015, peacefully at home. Born in Norwich on January 15, 1962, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Rose Marie (Spicer) Semmelrock. Harold was the owner of H. Rock and Stone and was a member of the VFW Post 594 in Norwich, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 950 in Bozrah, and was a board member of the Bozrah wet lands and zoning commission. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and his two loyal companion dogs Cocoa and Lucky. Surviving is his sister Catherine S. Capsalors and her husband Michael of New Britain and a nephew Jonathan Capsalors of New Britain. A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at his home after the New Year. Julia Phillips 1947 – 2015 Uncasville – Julia (Moat) Phillips, 68, of Vauxhall St. Ext., died Wednesday, December 2, 2015 in Orchard Grove Specialty Care. She was the wife of Paul Phillips. Born in Johnson City, NY, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Agnes (Stevenson) Moat. Mrs. Phillips worked as a secretary. She was a member of a rifle team and enjoyed knitting, baking, crafts, classical music and was a fan of the New York Yankees. Julia is survived by her son, Robbie Tappenden of NY; her sisters, Colleen Jenkins of Middlebury, IN, Donna Wortinger of Benton, IN, and Tammi Eller of Quaker Hill, CT. Ruth (Johnson) Morin 1921 – 2015 Ruth (Johnson) Morin, 94 beloved wife of the late Rutherford A. Morin, Sr., of Perkins Ave., died Thursday evening, December 10, 2015, at the Backus Hospital. Born in Norwich, she was the daughter of the late Axel and Mathilda (Johnson) Johnson. On August 14, 1943 at St. Patrick Church, she was united in marriage to Rutherford A. Morin. Mrs. Morin was a homemaker and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Norwich. Surviving are three sons Pierre A. Morin, Paul R. Morin, and Philip J. Morin and his wife Laura all of Norwich and a grandson Frank A. Morin of Plainfield. She was predeceased by a brother Herman Johnson and three sisters Esther Johnson, Anna Johnson, and Frieda Johnson. Uncasville – Francis R. “Dick” McMahon, 85 husband of Nancy (Coyle) Moros and the late Lucille (Colburn) McMahon, of Mt. Laurel Ridge Rd., formerly of Taftville, died Wednesday evening, December 23, 2015 at home. Born in Norwich, he was the son of the late Francis and Mary (McCarthy) McMahon. Dick was a graduate of the Norwich Free Academy class of 1948. On June 28, 1952 in Sacred Heart Church he was united in marriage to Lucille Colburn who passed away on August 21, 1996. He then married his present wife, Nancy Moros on August 27, 2011 at Camp Niantic. Mr. McMahon was employed for over fourty-four years as a meat cutter for the First National Supermarkets and continued working part time until fully retiring four years ago. Dick was a proud veteran of the Korean War serving with the United States Army. Dick was a life member of the VFW Post 594 in Norwich. Surviving are his sons Gary McMahon and his wife Kate, Patrick McMahon and his wife Laura, Kevin McMahon, and Joe McMahon and his wife Sydney, Joel Moros and his wife Sarah; his daughters Paula Gauvin and her husband Rene, Karen McMahon, and Mary Crawford and her husband Bruce, Jeannine Kniffen and her husband Stephen, and Marissa Butten and her husband Mark; grandchildren Philip McMahon and his wife Lisa, Sylena Stabley, Katie May and her husband Jason, Ken Gauvin, Franky, Erin, Sean, Connor, Mason, Noah, Ethan, and Christopher McMahon, Adam and Olivia Crawford, Alissa and Austin Rennacker; eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Lucille McMahon; sons Michael and Ricky McMahon; a brother Tom McMahon; and a son in law Lee Rennacker. Mary Ann Franzius 1934 – 2016 Groton-Mary Ann (Gualtieri) Franzius, 81, of Bayberry Lane, died Friday January 1, 2016 in Lawrence and Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Fred Franzius for 37 years. Born in Norwich, she was the daughter of the late Deno & Theresa (Gross) Gualtieri. MaryAnn worked as a waitress for Ming Garden and as a sales clerk for Down Under Sheep Skin. She spent her time “donating” at Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun and the Plainfield dog track. She loved to spend time with her family and her grandchildren. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the ICU nurses, the Floor 4 nurses and the Floor 6 nurses at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital and to Hospice of Southeast Connecticut for their support of MaryAnn and her family. Fred H. Terpe 1927-2016 Preston – Fred H. Terpe, 88, of Preston died Sunday January 3, 2016 in the William W. Backus Hospital. He was the loving husband of Barbara (Greiner) Terpe for 66 years. Born in Manhattan, NY, he was the son of the late Frederick K. and Emma M. (Scheifele) Terpe. Fred worked as an electrician for Beaudreau Electric. He was a WWII Navy Veteran. Fred served the Poquetanuck Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years in many capacities including Deputy Chief and Fire Police Captain retiring in 2013. He was a member of the New London County Chiefs Association, the Pequot Fire Police Association and the Preston VFW. He was a communicant of St. James Episcopal Church. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing and bowling. In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by his three sons, Rev. Richard Terpe of Griswold, Frederick Terpe and his wife Allison of Preston and Kurt Terpe and his fiancée Heather Mongeau of Preston; seven grandchildren, Andrea Terpe, Barbara Terpe, Robert Terpe, Cynthia Terpe, Elizabeth Baker, Jennifer Bingham, and Brandon Terpe; seven great grandchildren; three nieces and three nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Emma Klaus and two nephews. Therese L. Peterson 1926 – 2015 Norwich – Therese (Racicot) Peterson, 89, of West Town Street, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2016 in Norwichtown Rehabilitation & Care Center. She was the loving wife of the late William M. Peterson. They were married on September 18, 1948 at Our Lady of Pity Roman Catholic Church in Cambridge, MA. Born in Cambridge, MA, she was the daughter of the late Treffle and Bernadette (LaBerge) Racicot. Therese was a homemaker, enjoyed playing bridge and visiting the casino. Therese is survived by her sons, Glenn Peterson and his wife Diane of Avon, MA, and Neal Peterson of Norwich; her daughter, Linda Beford of Newport, NH; her sister, Florence Donahue of Arlington, MA; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Rocks Stone Supply, LLC and was a member of the VFW Post 594 in Norwich, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 950 in Bozrah, and a board member of the Town of Bozrah’s Inland Wetlands Commission. Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, working the land and spending time with his 2 loyal companion dogs Coco and Lucky. Harold’s enthusiasm, generosity and endless ways to recreate will truly be missed. His talents, skills, knowledge and laughter were priceless gifts. Jacqueline Gardner went home to the Lord on ¬¬¬¬ January 26, 2016. Jackie was born February 9, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York to Alfred and Loretta Zaugg. She is survived by three siblings: Alberta & Warren Nolan and family of New York, Warren & Pat Zaugg and family of Florida, and Susanne Laezza and family of Oklahoma. Jackie was married to Ed Gulowsen and later to Arthur Gardner, both predeceased her. Jackie is survived by three children: Ed & Nichole Gulowsen and family, Al & Pam Gulowsen and family, & Marion and family and is predeceased by her youngest son, Eric Gulowsen. Jackie was blessed with nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Jackie loved the Lord, her family and people. Jackie spent many years working at the used clothing store of the Norwich Diocese. Jackie also volunteered as a home-based foster grandparent for TVCCA and later volunteered at Senior Resources. Kenneth J. Ring died peacefully on January 29, 2016 in Norwich, CT at the age of 89. He was born on January 4, 1927 in Norwich, CT to George F. Ring, Sr. and Harriet (Lafferty) Ring. After graduating from the Norwich Free Academy in 1944, Kenny served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was joined in marriage to Mary Kathleen “Kay” (Daley) Ring in 1952 and had four children, Kathleen T. Oberg and her husband Chuck of Myrtle Beach, SC, Kevin P. Ring, Sr. and his wife Zayne of Scotland, CT, Jacqueline A. Ring of Norwich, CT, and Sheila R. Reed and her husband Harry of Waterford, CT. Kenny worked for the State of Connecticut, Public Works Department for more than 20 years. He graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1990 with a Bachelor Degree in General Studies. Kenny donated more than 25 gallons of blood to the Red Cross, enjoyed wintering in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and taking morning walks in the East Great Plains area. Kenny is survived by his wife and children, grandchildren James K. John of Philadephia, PA, Kevin P. Ring, Jr. of Middletown, CT, Courtney Z. Ring of Colchester, CT, Conor P. and Aidan M. Reed of Waterford, CT, in addition to numerous nephews, nieces and great-nephews and great-nieces. Kenneth is preceded in death by his four brothers and two sisters: George, Raymond, John, Milton, Mary Ann and Mildred. Pauline F. Reardon, 83, formerly of Niantic, left peacefully on Thursday January 28, 2016 comforted by the staff at St. Joseph Living Center in Windham. She was the daughter of the late Harold J. and Mary C. (Ryan) Reardon. A graduate of the Norwich Free Academy, St. Francis School of Nursing and Catholic University of America, Pauline worked as a school nurse for St. Thomas More School, the Moriarty School, St. Joseph and St. Mary Schools. She spent many happy years traveling throughout the United States and Europe with her sister, Carol. A woman of many talents, Pauline enjoyed working with stained glass, stenciling and numerous other pursuits. Each Christmas, friends and family looked forward to receiving one of her unique handmade cards. A devout Catholic, she had been a communicant of Ss. Peter and Paul and Sacred Heart Church in Norwich, and in later years, of St. Matthias in Flanders. Pauline’s kindness and her generosity to many charities were a hallmark of her Christian faith. Pauline is survived by many friends and family members including her first cousins, Patricia Flahive of Norwich, Susan Reardon-Lacy of Norwich, William Reardon of Middleboro, MA, Carol Hoagland of Redding, California, Jane Stanford and Stephanie Kelly of Spokane, Washington, Martha Wright of Idaho, Richard Cartright, Ted Cartright, and John Farrell of Cumberland, Rhode Island and Joseph Farrell of Ayer, Vermont. She was predeceased by her sister Carol M. Reardon. Margaret Anne Shaughnessy 1929 – 2016 Norwich – Margaret Ann (Altschul) Shaughnessy, 86, lifelong resident of Norwichtown and wife of the late James W. Shaughnessy, died on Sunday evening January 31, 2016, in Norwichtown Rehabilitation and Care Center. Born in Norwich she was the daughter of the late Albert and Margaret Mary (Dingivan) Altschul. Mrs. Shaughnessy was a graduate of the Norwich Free Academy graduating in 1947. On June 2, 1951 at Sacred Heart Church in Norwichtown she was united in marriage to James W. Shaughnessy who died on December 23, 2002. Mrs. Shaughnessy worked for many years at the Shetucket Harness Company in Norwich. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Norwichtown and was an avid reader, and a very active member of the NFA Class of ’47 Reunion Committee. Surviving are two sons Kerry Shaughnessy of Baltic and Kevin Shaughnessy and his wife Famatta of Norwich; two daughters Kelly Raab and her husband Stephen of Norwell, MA and Karen Twomey and her husband John of Norwich; six grandchildren Patrick, Bryan, Kaitlin, Brianna, Alex, and Matthew and three great grandchildren Braydon, Avery, and Barrett. Norwich- Louise Soter Farrah, 91 of Lestertown Rd. ,Groton, formerly of Norwich died peacefully Sunday February 21, 2016. She was the loving wife of George E.Farrah for 67 years. Born in Worcester, MA, She was the daughter of the late Argelea & Krisula (George) Soter. Louise worked as a patient aide for Uncas on the Thames. She was a singer in her younger years performing on the radio, at live events and at her church. She was a selfless women who loved to cook, bake, nurture and care for her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, and watching golf, tennis and ice skating. Born in New Britain, CT on July 16, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Alphonse and Jeanne Fortin. Mrs. LaCourse worked for many years in the cafeteria at Norwich Free Academy. She was a communicant at the Cathedral of St. Patrick and enjoyed crocheting, baking, cooking, and sewing; above all the one thing that she cherished was spending time home with her children and grandchildren being a homemaker. Surviving are three sons Lawrence R. LaCourse of Newport News, VA, John R. LaCourse and his wife Carol Ann of Lee, NH, and William R. LaCourse and his wife Kathleen of Catonsville, MD; three daughters Denise A. Fournier and her husband John of Norwich, Rose Marie LaFleur and her husband David of Waterford, and Susan A. Therese A. Kent 1926 – 2016 We sadly announce the passing of Therese Ann (Quinn) Kent, 89, of Montville on February 29, 2016. Therese was born in Norwich on May 24, 1926 to Kathryn A. (Sullivan) and James S. Quinn. She attended St. Mary’s Grammar School, Norwich Free Academy, and Bryant College. Therese worked various office jobs in Hartford and Norwich and retired after many years as Supply Clerk at the Groton Submarine Base. Therese Ann was the beloved matriarch of the Quinn family and the last of her generation. She was able to share her family knowledge and memories until her passing. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Mae Ryley, James Quinn, John Quinn, Edward Quinn, Eileen Robertson, Charles Quinn, Kathleen Belli, and their spouses. Therese survived the heartbreak of losing two sons, Robert Oliver Kent and Charles Quinn Kent, and ultimately her husband of 63 years, Oliver F. Kent. Survivors are Margaret Kent and her husband Donald Thimble of Block Island and many supportive and caring nieces and nephews. Barbara A. Goupille 1936 – 2016 Norwich – Barbara A. (Brogno) Goupille, 79, of Grant Court, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016 in her home surrounded by family. She was the loving wife of the late Paul R. Goupille. Barbara was a devoted mother, nana, aunt and friend. She was a talented seamstress, a fierce card player with her lady friends and enjoyed cooking Italian food; particularly famous for her lasagna and meatballs. She was a member of AARP, the Rose City Senior Center and a communicant of Saints Peter and Paul Church. Barbara is survived by her daughters, Renee Goupille and Giselle Goupille, her son, Paul F. Goupille, all of Norwich; her granddaughters, Grace and Celina, her “adopted” daughter Wendy Heilweil; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister, Nancy Enos. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to their mom’s caregivers Yvette and Shalonda for providing excellent care and companionship. Relatives and friends are welcome to join Barbara’s family from 9:00 am to 10:00 am on Friday, March 18, 2016 at the Cummings-Gagne Funeral Home, 82 Cliff St., Norwich, CT followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at Saints Peter and Paul Church, 181 Elizabeth St, Norwich, CT. Paula (Murphy) Coutu 1953 – 2016 Norwich – Paula (Murphy) Coutu, 62, of Smith Ave., died Monday morning March 28, 2016 at home. She was the loving companion of Stephen F. Srednicki for over 33 years, and wife of the late William E. Benoit and George Coutu. Born in Norwich, she was the daughter of the late John and Gertrude (Bazinet) Murphy. Mrs. Coutu worked for many years as a restorative aide in area nursing homes. Paula is survived by, a son Wade Benoit and his wife Melissa of Griswold and a brother Michael Murphy of Canterbury. Elizabeth “Betty” Burns W. Hartford – Elizabeth “Betty” (Brown) Burns of Tunxis Rd. died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 in St. Mary Nursing Home. She was the loving wife of James R. Burns for 49 years. Born in New Orleans, LA, she was the daughter of the late George and Abbietta (Hasler) Brown. Mrs. Burns worked as a fifth grade teacher for 44 years for the West Hartford School System. She was a member of the National Education Association, the Connecticut Education Association, and the West Hartford Teachers Association. She enjoyed traveling and being a “Mom” to her five West Highland White Terriers. In addition to her husband, Elizabeth is survived by her sister, Beverly Brown of Norwich.
